In May, the Alert System of Deforestation ("SAD-Sistema de Alerta de Desmatamento") of IMAZON ("Instituto do Homem e da Amazônia") has detected 84 square kilometers of deforestation alert type clear cut in the Legal Amazon. Read by "corte raso" = clear-cutting (or slash-and-burn) total abolition of the forest, in opposition to degradation, which means a progressive removal of trees of the forest (see photos below).
From "INPE-Instituto Nacional de Pesquisa Espacial". "Programa Amazônia: Monitoramento do Desmatamento e da Degradação Florestal na Amazônia" |
The Mato Grosso continued at the top of the ranking of deforestation by state; 61% deforestation in May, The other states were: Pará (29%), Rondônia (7%), Amazonas (2%), and Acre (1%).
On the other hand, in May, 74.5 square kilometers of forest have been degraded (stage prior to clear-cutting) 74.5 square kilometers of forest). A reduction of 80%, compared with may of 2012, when the forest degradation was 370.5 square kilometers.
.For Heron Martins (researcher at IMAZON) the decrease in degradation is good news. The degradation is much linked to forestry for livestock and agriculture. The decrease in the index can be an indicator that the combat to logging actions are yielding results ".
[CONCLUSION (MINE): For me (author of this blog) it's hard to say which of these two things would be better for the Amazon, without considering a third alternative: ZERO deforestation]
